Dog Fashion – Leashes And Collars

Dog fashion accessories have become almost as popular and the choice almost as expansive as for human clothes and accessories. Virtually every type of look can be found, including those that match the look and style of the owner. However, while collars and leashes can be bought to make a statement or give your dog the ultimate look, they should also be bought for their functionality. Leashes and collars combine to give benefit when walking your dog as well as for training and control – finding the right size, the most appropriate style, and the best look will make walking and training easier and give your best friend the best looking accessories.

Training Collars

You can buy either training or standard fashion collars, but a number of leashes offer a combination of these two. Typical training collars include choker chains, which are metal chains designed to give you extra control over your dog without causing them harm or discomfort. The chain tightens as the dog pulls on the lead, naturally causing them to pull less as they begin to experience a little discomfort.

Collar And Leash Materials

Other common dog collar materials include leather and nylon. All materials offer a good degree of strength and are usually ideal for the majority of dogs. Some larger dogs may require stronger collars to offer greater control and less risk of damage. Leashes are also available in a similar selection of materials. Nylon and leather leashes can use any of a number of different designs and colours but if your dog tends to chew their leash then you may need to opt for a metal or similarly tough material.

Size Matters

Picking the right size of dog collar and leash is important. The collar should fit snugly around the neck without being too tight and while many are adjustable you should select the one that most closely fits the size of your dog's neck. Dog leashes also have a good variety in size; choosing the right length is as important a decision as choosing the right thickness. Retractable and other thin leads are not advised for larger dogs because they can be easily broken and they do not make dog walking or training any easier.

Walking And Training

If your dog is well trained and walks obediently then you typically have a greater range of options in choosing dog collars and dog leashes. Nylon collars are especially colourful and fun but they are not usually the best option for use in training puppies or young dogs. The training method used when walking your dog is correction training and so the more control you have over your dog's movements the more correction you are able to administer. This also allows you to offer verbal praise when they are walking correctly.

Making The Right Choice

With so many choices it can seem an overwhelming prospect to find the most appropriate dog collar and dog leash for your dog. However, with a little research and some careful shopping it is possible to buy the ideal combination of collar and leash that look great and work effectively in helping to train your dog and walk them properly.
