Signs That It’s Time To Get A Training Collar

...for excessive pulling that is very difficult to control you might want to consider a choke chain, slip lead, pinch lead, or prong dog training collar.

Pulling

This is by far the most common problem that people face when walking their dog. Dogs pull whilst walking for many reasons, but the most common is that they haven't been taught that it is wrong. Corrective training alone can be effective if the dog hasn't become too accustomed to the act and a short pull on the lead whenever they pull will help to discourage the behaviour in future. However, for excessive pulling that is very difficult to control you might want to consider a choke chain, slip lead, pinch lead, or prong dog training collar.

Breathing

Bad breathing can be caused by a collar that is too tight or by too much pulling. Preventing your dog from pulling is obviously the ideal solution but it isn't always the most feasible. A harness is not a training tool; it helps to spread the pressure placed on your dog's body caused by constant pulling. As such, it actually makes pulling less painful and less uncomfortable which can encourage more pulling. However, a dog harness used in conjunction with a choker chair or other form of dog training collar can be used to prevent bad breathing and other injuries associated with pulling.

Pulling Back

Dogs that don't enjoy the feeling of their collar or want to slip their constraints may try walking or pulling backwards and with some types of lead this can lead to them getting free. A slip lead or choke chain can prevent pulling but may not be an effective tool to prevent a dog that pulls backwards against their leash. The Martingale clip tightens as the dog pulls back making it almost impossible for your dog to slip its lead and get away.

Aggression

Aggression in dogs can be caused by many factors and it will most often present itself when walking because this is when they are presented with situations that they don't ordinarily face. Fear and even a feeling that they need to protect you can lead to aggression but one of the symptoms is that your dog will pull to get to people and other animals. Choke chains and other dog training collars can help but you should seek help to correct the overall problem.

Standard Training Collars

When possible, you should attempt to train your dog and walk your dog using a standard collar or a standard training collar. These are effective for almost all forms of training and walking and they ensure that you encourage the proper behaviour rather than force it. Encouraged behaviour is more desirable because your dog is more likely to behave itself in other circumstances as well as those that you train for. Our wide selection of Wonderdog products include nylon collars and leashes as well as flat buckle leashes and harnesses so that you can enjoy the time you spend walking with your dog.
